Sclera Contacts

Sclera Contacts are large diameter rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye called the sclera. They are filled with a solution that acts as a fluid reservoir to improve comfort for people who experience dry eyes and conditions that affect the tear film such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Sjogren’s Disease, Keratoconus, Graft-versus-Host disease or other corneal diseases.

Unlike traditional contact lenses that rest on the cornea, scleral contacts rest on the more durable surface of the sclera which has fewer nerve endings. This provides superior comfort and may protect the cornea from further damage by debris and irritants. In addition, the space between the lens and cornea helps to keep the eyes moist and prevents hypoxic stress from forming on the corneal surface.

The larger contact lens size and greater eye coverage also make scleral contact lenses more stable and less prone to shifting than conventional soft or RGP contact lenses. They are easily inserted and removed by following the specific instructions provided by our eye care professional.
